fylm.ai 1.3 Update – a New era in AI colour grading

Today we are launching a whole new era of what's possible with AI powered colour grading tools and are introducing three context-aware AI tools.

Today we are releasing fylm.ai 1.3 update. 1.3 update opens up a whole new era of AI powered colour grading tools and introduces 2 new tools along with vast improvements to existing ones.

From the very first day we wanted to democratise colour grading. We wanted to empower creators to build awesome looking grades with ease and speed in an intuitive and fun way. That’s why we introduced features like AI Colour Extract and Colour Match which allowed anyone to create and match grades easily. That’s also why we built the Magic Mode – probably the most intuitive and fun way to colour grade.

We didn’t stop there and we also introduced awesome looking ACES print film emulations, Cine Looks and tools like Subtractive Colour model which mimics the properties of real film stock. Combine that with support for practically any still raw format, export to .cube and .xmp and you get an awesome colour grading package that for the first time, truly allows anyone, with the most basic knowledge to colour grade their materials from scratch.

fylm.ai 1.3 update is the progression of this development and it offers a whole new AI powered colour grading experience.

Introducing AI Auto Correct

How do you automatically correct something? It’s very hard to do it, mainly because it’s very hard for a machine to understand the creative intent behind the shot. Not every highlight should be dimmed and not every shadow should be corrected. Incorrect white balance? Might be a part of a creative decision. So how do you automatically correct an image? Well, you try to make the machine understand context. Easier said than done but after long development period, we are please to introduce what we think is a truly revolutionary AI powered auto correct.

When you add AI Auto Correct to your image, it will automatically correct it using the “Favor Context” option. This option will perform a correction within the original context of the image. For example, if the original image is dark and cold, AI Auto Correct will try to preserve that feeling when correcting the image. Usually, you would want to use this option when you want to retain the original atmosphere of the image which is based on a creative intent.

Sometimes though, you need an “absolute” correction. This is what “Favor Neutrality” option is for. This option will perform an absolute correction regardless of the image’s original context. For example, if the original image is dark and cold, AI Auto Correct will brighten the image and make it warmer to create a neutral result. Usually, you would want to use this option when working with materials that were shot with incorrect settings for the shooting conditions.

To use the AI Auto Correct, simply add it from the Tools menu.

Let’s see some AI Auto Correct examples in comparison to a popular 3rd party software. On the left is the original image, in the middle a result of AI correction in a popular 3rd party software and on the right is the result of fylm.ai Auto Correct.

Introducing AI Colour Match

One of the more tedious tasks of colour grading is colour matching but it doesn’t have to be. Welcome fylm.ai AI Colour Match.

Just like AI Auto Correct, AI Colour Match also offers two modes. When using “Favor Context“, AI Colour Match will extract a colour grade within the original context of user’s image and the Match. For example, if the original image is bright, AI Colour Match will try to preserve that feeling when extracting the grade from a Match. Usually, you would want to use this option when you want to retain the original atmosphere of the image which is based on a creative intent.

The second mode is “Favor Absoluteness“. In this mode AI Colour Match will extract a colour grade while favoring the context of the Match. For example, if the original image is bright, but the Match is dark, AI Colour Match will darken the image so it more closely resembles the Match. Usually, you would want to use this option when you want to resemble the appearance of the Match more closely.

Introducing vast improvements to the AI Colour Extract

AI Colour Extract tool was introduced with the introduction of fylm.ai. and while it was a very nice and very useful tool, we thought we could do significantly better. Sometimes it was too eager on making the perfect match at the expense of pushing the grade too far. No longer. We applied the same principals of “context” and “absoluteness” and completely retrained our AI model so that it extracts a perfect grade while preserving the image quality at all times.

Just like AI Colour Match, AI Colour Extract also offers two modes. When using “Favor Context“, AI Colour Extract will extract a colour grade within the original context of user’s image and the Match. For example, if the original image is bright, AI Colour Extract will try to preserve that feeling when extracting the grade from a Match. Usually, you would want to use this option when you want to retain the original atmosphere of the image which is based on a creative intent.

The second mode is “Favor Absoluteness“. In this mode AI Colour Extract will extract a colour grade while favoring the context of the Match. For example, if the original image is bright, but the Match is dark, AI Colour Extract will darken the image so it more closely resembles the Match. Usually, you would want to use this option when you want to resemble the appearance of the Match more closely.
